The National Science Foundation has announced two $10 million projects to set up cloud computing “test beds” to facilitate experimentation with new cloud architectures and architecturally enabled applications of cloud computing.
NSF CIO, Amy Northcutt, said the Chameleon and CloudLab projects complement industry efforts and could help enable computer scientists to design cloud computing architectures for a new generation of innovative applications, such as real-time and safety-critical applications like those used in medical devices, power grids, and transportation systems.
Chameleon and CloudLab will be available for free to researchers from institutions across the country and Northcutt expects thousands of scientists to use them.
