Distributed Denial of Service attacks (bombarding a server with requests) are becoming more frequent and one reason why is that they are being used to distract IT staff in order to insert malware without being detected as quickly, according to Neustar Inc.

Neustar, a Lockheed Martin spinoff that operates the North American Numbering Plan for area codes, offers cloud-based DDoS protection, among other telecom services. It has just released its third annual “DDoS Attacks and Impacts Report,” based on a survey of 450 North American companies in a variety of industries.

The report says DDoS attacks are becoming quicker and more concentrated, noting that half of businesses experiencing a DDoS attack – and a breach – in 2013, reported that a virus or malware was installed or activated, with attackers pilfering funds, data and intellectual property in some cases.

Other findings include that companies that are hit oncewill most likely be hit again, and that there are more and larger DDoS atatacks (150 percent increase in size over 2013) taking place.
