Just half of 203 federal cyber security professionals surveyed in July by MeriTalk, a public-private partnership focused on improving government IT, say the Federal Information Security Management Act has resulted in improved security at their agencies.

In a report based on the survey – "FISMA Fallout: The State of the Union," sponsored by NetApp – MeriTalk found that half the respondents cannot keep up with the amount of data crossing their networks while the amount of data they need to protect will increase by 47 percent by 2015.

The report found a lack of confidence with FISMA overall, saying 73 percent feel their existing security solutions are either insufficient now, or will be after next year, and 86 percent viewing FISMA compliance as an increase in cost.
