Tighter budgets and the prioritization of interoperable solutions and security considerations are driving DoD IT plans, according to a new report from Deltek, a research and software company serving federal contractors. The report focuses on the DoD Joint Information Environment, cloud computing, cyber security, big data, mobility, business systems modernization, health IT, intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance – ISR, and unmanned vehicles. It considers these priorities in the context of declining budgets, predicting that contracting dollars will decline from $61.5 billion in 2013 to $53 billion in 2018, bringing with it increased scrutiny, for agencies and contractors alike. Currently, work is being done to prepare the way for the JIE, including software reduction, data center consolidation, cloud-computing and mobile security, the report says, noting that the military services have been called on to budget for JIE in their fiscal 2015 budget submissions.
