A new study has concluded that Platform-as-a-Service – PaaS, could significantly lower IT costs by enabling software development and deployment in a virtual environment.
According to the study, published by MeriTalk and sponsored by Red Hat, the current software development life cycle on average takes over three years (the study was based on interviews with 153 federal IT executives), but PaaS can accelerate the development process by 30 percent.
Only about 12 percent of federal IT personnel use PaaS but some 70 percent are considering using the technology or are already transitioning to it for software development, the report said. However, it adds that security remains a concern for those seeking to transition to a PaaS development environment, and obtaining leadership buy-in remains another challenge.
