Three new government social media toolkits are in development for public comment and improvement on the Github platform, according to a post from Justin Herman of GSA’s Office of Citizen Services and Innovative Technologies.
The first is a Federal Social Media Policy Development toolkit, produced by a working group with representatives from some 20 agencies and that is designed to help offices better evaluate and improve their governance policies.
The Department of Labor Office of Disability Employment Policy is also updating a new Social Social Media Accessibility toolkit, and new social media performance analysis recommendations are being developed based on a Digital Analytics Programauthorized by the White House Digital Government Strategy.
According to Herman, social media in the public sector is as much about public relations as it is public service. He also notes that because government agencies cannot verify certain social media accounts as official, for legal reasons, that “agencies have a responsibility to diversify their digital programs among engagement channels and provide multiple paths of entry to services.”
