The White House has announced an open data action plan to build on recent open data efforts beginning with an executive order to make open and machine-readable data the new default for government information.

Initiatives in recent years have attempted to scale up open data efforts across the health, energy, climate, education, finance, public safety and global development sectors, noted White House CIO Steven Van Roekel in announcing the action plan.

He said new efforts planed for 2014 and 2015 include an upgrade to the Small Business Administration’s database of small business suppliers to enable software developers to create tools to help manufacturers more easily find qualified US suppliers; Opening up the entire digitized collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum to help developers build educational apps and tools; and, Release of the FDA’s annual adverse drug event data set, currently only available in limited quarterly reports.

The plan describes ongoing efforts including a push by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to make its vast weather, climate, and Earth observation data holdings more easily available and usable in the cloud.
