A government “structured and open content models working group” is trying to get agencies to adopt and contribute to data standards that will help agencies produce content that is platform-agnostic, format-free, and device-independent.

In 2013, GSA’s Digital Services Innovation Center sponsored a cross-agency working group to develop shared and open content models for digital content across the federal government. This group created content models for “articles” and “events”—two commonly used content types on government websites. The models define a core set of metadata elements for those content types (increasingly being adopted as HTML5 tags become the norm) that may be supplemented for agency-specific use.

Agencies can check out the models, or comment and submit pull requests on GitHub to help develop them here: https://github.com/GSA/Open-And-Structured-Content-Models/issues.
